International Council of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS)

The International Council of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS) is the international organisation for all scholars who have a special interest in the study of names (place-names, personal names, and proper names of all other kinds). The aim of the Council is the advancement, representation and co-ordination of name research on an international level and in an interdisciplinary context. This new organisation replaces the former International Committee of Onomastic Sciences which, as a closed society, exclusively co-opted representatives of countries and was therefore not open to individual scholars.

Every scholar who is actively engaged in scholarly name research may become a member of ICOS. The annual membership subscription is €20 (€10 for students). Members receive the journal Onoma, the official publication of the association. It contains topical research reports as well as basic theoretical articles concerning all areas of scholarly name research. Presently, each volume is thematic, and the themes for the most recent volumes may be found on the Onoma page of this website. In addition, members of ICOS receive a reduction in the fees for the International Congress of Onomastic Sciences which is normally held every three years. These congresses are organised on behalf of ICOS by members. The General Assembly of ICOS, which also functions as its Business Meeting, and at which its officers are elected, is usually held in conjunction with these congresses.

The official languages of ICOS are French, German, and English.

Der International Council of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS) ist die internationale Organisation aller Forscher, die sich mit Namen (Ortsnamen, Personennamen und sonstigen Eigennamen) beschäftigen. Ziel der Organisation ist die Förderung, die Vertretung und die Koordination der Namenforschung auf internationaler Ebene und im interdisziplinären Zusammenhang. Diese neue Vertretung löst das alte International Committee of Onomastic Sciences ab, das als ‘geschlossene Gesellschaft’ ausschliesslich Vertreter eines Landes kooptierte und Einzelforschern nicht offenstand.

Jeder Forscher, der aktiv im Bereich der wissenschaftlichen Namenforschung arbeitet, kann Mitglied des ICOS werden. Der Jahresmitgliedsbeitrag beträgt 20 € (10 € für Studierende). Mitglieder erhalten die Zeitschrift Onoma, das offizielle Jahrbuch des Verbandes. Es enthält aktuelle Forschungsberichte aus allen Bereichen der wissenschaftlichen Namenforschung und Grundsatzartikel. Darüber hinaus ist die Teilnahmegebühr am Weltkongress für Namenforschung ermässigt. Diese zentrale wissenschaftliche Veranstaltung findet im Prinzip alle drei Jahre statt, sie wird vom ICOS unterstützt und von seinen Mitgliedern durchgeführt; gleichzeitig findet aus diesem Anlass die Generalversammlung des ICOS statt.

Die offiziellen Sprachen des ICOS sind Englisch, Französisch und Deutsch.

L’International Council of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS) est l’organisation internationale de tous les chercheurs ayant les noms propres pour objet d’étude (noms de personne, noms de lieu et autres noms propres). L’organisation a pour but d’encourager, représenter et coordonner la recherche onomastique au niveau international et en contexte interdisciplinaire. Elle remplace l’ancien International Committee of Onomastic Sciences, ‘club fermé’ réservé aux représentants nationaux cooptés, à l’exclusion des chercheurs individuels.

Désormais, tout chercheur travaillant dans le domaine de l’onomastique scientifique peut devenir membre de l’ICOS. La cotisation annuelle est de 20 € (10 € pour les étudiants). Les adhérants recevront Onoma, publication annuelle de l’organisation, donnant à la fois des articles de fond et l’état des recherches dans les différents domaines de l’onomastique. La qualité de membre implique une réduction des droits d’inscription au Congrès mondial d’onomastique. Celui-ci a lieu normalement tous les trois ans, organisé par les membres de l’ICOS, avec le soutien de celui-ci; à cette occasion se tient également l’Assemblée générale de l’ICOS.

Les langues officielles de l’ICOS sont l’allemand, l’anglais, et le français.
