Kyrgyzstan’s citizens can now opt to use patronymic or matronymic as their legal name

Kyrgyzstan’s judicial bodies have recently issued a ruling that grants citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic the freedom to choose between a patronym and matronym, media reports.

The new amendment to existing legal regulations has been declared final and mandatory for all departments and organizations by the Constitutional Court, with the requirement for approval by the Kyrgyz Cabinet.

The ruling came about due to the efforts of activist Altyn Kapalova, who petitioned the court on the issue of matronym. The decision has been widely shared on social media by Kapalova. She explained that any adult applying for a passport can now use their mother’s name as a matronymic.
