Call for Paper Proposals for a session at the 25th International Medieval Congress on Names as Memorials, July 2-5, 2018, Leeds, England

This year the International Medieval Congress celebrates its 25th anniversary with the special thematic strand “Memory”. The Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources intends to organize a session (or more than one if they receive sufficient interest!) at the IMC on the subject of “Names as Memorials”.

Nominees for the next ICOS Board of Directors (2017-2020)

The next Board of Directors will be elected by the General Assembly on 1 September 2017 during the 26th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences in Debrecen. The General Assembly will elect officers for the following positions: 1 President, 2 Vice‐Presidents, 1 Secretary, 1 Treasurer, 1 Assistant Secretary and Web Officer, 1 Postgraduate Representative (Non‐Executive) and 5 other Non‐Executive Members.

Organisational bid for XXVII International Congress of Onomastic Sciences (2020)

Ahead of this year’s 26th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences (Debrecen, 27 August – 1 September 2017), please find here the organisational bid received from the potential organisers of the 27th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences (2020). One application was received, from the Institute of Polish Language at the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Faculty of Polish Philology of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

Société française d’onomastique - XVIIIe colloque d’onomastique

Après Paris, c’est Toulouse qui accueillera en 2018 le colloque international qu’organise tous les deux ans la Société française d’onomastique. Cette manifestation scientifique, qui se déroulera du 17 au 20 janvier 2018, à l’Université de Toulouse, et en partenariat avec cet établissement, sera consacrée à la terminologie onomastique et à l’onomastique occitane.

ONOMA Call for Papers

ONOMA is happy to call for submissions for a non-themed volume, tentatively numbered as 50 and published early next year. While recent volumes have each had a specific theme, this time we will be happy to accept submissions on any aspect on onomastics.

Those interested in submitting a paper are advised to send a one-page abstract by April 30 to onoma@icosweb.net. Accepted authors will be informed by May 31, and the full articles will be expected by September 30.

Ojārs Bušs 1944–2017

Ojārs Bušs
ICOS was very saddened to hear of the death of Ojārs Bušs on 3 January 2017, aged 72. Dr Bušs was a long-standing member and will be remembered fondly. We publish below an obituary written by his close colleague Laimute Balode (Helsinki/Rīga).

Fourth International Conference on Onomastics: Names and Naming

The North University Centre of Baia Mare (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca) is pleased to announce the Fourth International Conference on Onomastics 'Name and Naming' (ICONN 4), which will be held on 5-7 September 2017. The theme of the conference is 'sacred and profane in onomastics'.

ICOS 2014 Proceedings now published online

We are delighted to announce that Names and Their Environment. Proceedings of the 25th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences, Glasgow, 15-19 August 2014 has been published online today. The proceedings have been edited by Carole Hough and Daria Izdebska and are available for free download either by volume (five volumes in total) or by individual paper (organised by thematic section).
