Name of the Month: Motlalepula

Motlalepula

This is SeTswana for `Bringer of Rain’ (compare the unit of currency of Botswana, the pula `rain’, for rain is
prosperity on the edge of the Kalahari (Kgalagadi)). It is used as a
given name for both males and females, and may accordingly serve as a surname. It can be abbreviated to Pula.
It was formally bestowed on
Queen Elizabeth II as Head of the Commonwealth by President Nelson Mandela in 1996 because she arrived for a visit to
Gauteng in South
Africa during an unusually wet
rainy season, and it is also the name of at least one South African mastiff breeding bitch. It’s amazing what you can
find on the Web.

Some readers may also remember a song with this title by Hugh Masekela (1984).
