Prof. Dragoş Moldovanu passed away on March 1, 2019

Prof. Dragoş Moldovanu (born in 1941), a renowned Romanian linguist, passed away on March 1, 2019.

He has begun his scientific activity as a lexicographer and for many years he has been the Toponymy Department’s chair at “A. Philippide” Institute of Romanian Philology (Romanian Academy – Iaşi Branch) as well as a tenured professor at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iaşi. He was the coordinator of the series “Tezaurul toponimic al României. Moldova” [“Romanian Toponymic Thesaurus. Moldavia”]. After many toponymic investigations, he developed the theory of “toponymic fields” that can and must be applied in studying the names of places and writing toponymic dictionaries.

He also wrote important articles on the history of Romanian language, stylistic, Slavonic, general linguistics, name theory and onomastics.

He will remain in our hearts as a great professor, dedicated researcher and dear colleague.
