Call for papers: Onoma 60

Guest editors: Přemysl Mácha, Žaneta Dvořáková (Czechia)

Dear colleagues,

We are inviting you to contribute to the thematic issue of Onoma journal dedicated to the problems of naming and renaming in Central and Eastern Europe due to the political upheavals in 20th and 21st century.

In the last century, the region of Central, South-Eastern, and Eastern Europe has undergone profound changes in all aspects of life due to several wars (WWII, Yugoslav Wars, Russian-Ukrainian war etc.), re-drawing of national boundaries, forced population removals, the communist era and the post-socialist transformation. One of the crucial components of these changes has been the redefinition of identities – national, ethnic, religious, social – vis-à-vis the formation of new geopolitical, economic and cultural realities that have often found expression in newly coined place names. Several waves of renaming have swept across Central and Eastern Europe, affecting public space.

The purpose of this thematic issue is to bring together researchers working on the topic of the politics of toponymy in Central and Eastern Europe in order to search for commonalities and differences in the development of national and regional (re-)naming ideologies and practices.

If you would like to contribute to this themed issue of Onoma, please submit your full final text by October 31, 2024, to e-mail z.dvorakova@ujc.cas.cz. Accepted authors will be informed by December 31, 2024.

Only studies which have never been published before in any language can be accepted for publishing. In preparing the article for submission, please use the ONOMA style sheet.

Onoma is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the International Council of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS). The volume will be available online in open access mode. For more information and past volumes, see Onoma’s website: http://onomajournal.org/
